Colombia and Panama pledge to phase out of coal-fired power generation

Colombia and Panama have pledged to phase out unabated coal-fired power generation by 2030, by joining the Powering Past Coal Alliance, a coalition comprising nearly 50 countries and working to advance the transition from unabated coal power generation to clean energy.

As of end-2022, coal represented about 9% of Colombia’s installed capacity with nearly 1.7 GW and 4% of its power generation with 3.7 TWh. The pledge to phase out of coal generation does not, however, include a phase out of coal production activities, as Colombia is one of the world’s largest producer and exporter of coal (54 Mt and 56 Mt, respectively, in 2022).

Panama, for its part, had only 120 MW of installed coal-fired capacity at the end of 2021, representing about 3% of its total installed capacity. The country aims to reach 90% of renewable power generation by 2030 (up from 80% currently, focusing on wind and solar.

The two countries mark the seventh and eighth Latin American countries to commit to coal phase-out, after Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, and Chile.
