CNNC, Rosatom sign contracts for Tianwan 7-8 nuclear reactors in China

Russian state-run nuclear corporation Rosatom and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) have signed contracts for the construction of two VVER-1200 reactors at the Tianwan 7 and 8 units in the Jiangsu province (China). These contracts follow the framework contracts signed in June 2018 that planned the construction of units 7 and 8 of the Tianwan plant and of two VVER-1200 units at the new Xudabao site in Liaoning province.

The Tianwan facility already includes the Tianwan-1 and Tianwan-2 units, which were commissioned in 2007. Tianwan-3 entered commercial operation in February 2018 and Tianwan-4 in October 2018. Tianwan-5 and Tianwan-6 1080 MWe ACPR1000 reactors were approved by the Chinese State Council in December 2015 and construction started in December 2015 for unit 5 and in September 2016 for unit 6. They are currently expected to enter commercial operation in December 2020 and in October 2021, respectively. Two additional reactors, Tianwan-7 and Tianwan-8, are also under consideration, though without any specific commissioning date so far.
