China will build four new VVER-1200 units at Tianwan and Xudabao

The Chinese government has signed an agreement with the Russian state-run nuclear company Rosatom for the construction of four new VVER-1200 units. Two units would be built at a greenfield site in Xudabao and two at Tianwan (Tianwan-7 and Tianwan-8) and the reactors and the associated equipment would be supplied by Russia. In addition, two other agreements have been signed for the development of a new CFR-600 fast reactor pilot project and the shipment of radionuclide heat units (UHR) used as parts of radioisotope thermoelectric generators to power equipment in China's space programme.

The Tianwan facility already includes the Tianwan-1 and Tianwan-2 units, which were commissioned in 2007. Tianwan-3 came onstream in December 2017 and will enter commercial operation later in 2018. Tianwan-5 and Tianwan-6 1080 MWe ACPR1000 reactors have been approved by the Chinese State Council in December 2015. They are currently expected to enter commercial operation in December 2020 and in October 2021, respectively.
