China plans to launch a rural pilot scheme for renewables

The National Energy Administration (NEA) of China plans to launch a pilot scheme to accelerate the development of renewables in rural areas. Provincial-level government departments would identify rural pilot counties for the development of renewable projects and submit development plans to the NEA by the end of May 2023. This scheme would enable to raise the share of renewable energies to 30% of primary energy consumption and over 60% of new capacity primary energy consumption in the pilot counties by 2025. In addition, local authorities would be allowed to deregulate and improve administration of renewable industries.

In addition, China plans to use renewables to power enhanced oil and gas recovery techniques, slightly raising domestic gas production through pressure-boosted mining techniques. The renewable potential for oil and gas facilities would be higher in the northern and western parts of the country, such as Xinjiang, Gansu and Heilongjiang.

According to the NEA, China's renewable power generation will surpass 50% of the country’s overall generation by 2025 and the overall electricity volumes generated by renewable power sources in China should reach 3,300 TWh by 2025. The Administration also expects the total installed capacity of wind and solar power to surpass 1,200 GW in 2030. According to the IRENA, China installed over 140 GW of renewable capacity in 2022.
