The government of Chile has decided to review the giant HidroAysen hydropower project and to decide within the next two months whether to go ahead with the project or to scrap it. The HidroAysen consortium of Endesa Chile (51%) and Colbun (49%) aims to develop a 2,750 MW hydropower complex, consisting in five plants, for a total investment of more than US$8bn. The project was initially approved in 2011 and the Chile's Supreme Court ruled in favour of the project in 2012, rejecting an appeal by environmental groups. The project, which involves flooding about 6,000 hectares, is arousing a fierce opposition and has been currently stalled. The first of the power stations was initially expected to commence operations in late 2019, with the complex expected to be completed by 2025.
