Chashma nuclear complex to add 2,700 MW in five years (Pakistan)

Pakistan plans to construct four new nuclear reactors over the next five years. The first set of nuclear power plants will each boast a capacity of 1,000 MW, while the latter two will generate 325 MW, for a combined added capacity of 2,650 MW. The new reactors will be added on to the existing Chashma nuclear power complex near the southern coastal city of Karachi, which currently operates two reactors with a combined capacity of 650 MW.

The two new plants will be called the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant-1 and Chashma Nuclear Power Plant-2. These plants will generate 1,000 MW. Work on the third and fourth Chashma Nuclear Power Plants too is underway. CNPP-3 is scheduled to be operational by December 2016 and the fourth plant in 2017. Authorities are hoping to complete these two plants about eight months ahead of scheduled.

The long term goal of Pakistan is to increase nuclear power generation to 8,800 MW by 2030.
