Canada’s Newfoundland province selects four wind projects for hydrogen plants

The government of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has selected four companies to develop wind projects intended to supply power to new hydrogen plants. The Newfoundland government has allowed EverWind NL Company, Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corp, ABO Wind and World Energy GH2 to apply for approval to use government land, subject to environmental assessment. Newfoundland had received 24 bids in total for the auction.

EverWind NL Company plans to develop an CAD8bn (US$6bn) green fuels project with 2 GW+ wind capacity on the Burin Peninsula, while Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corp intends to set up a 3 GW wind to amonia project in central Newfoundland, targeting to start surveys for its project in 2023, while construction is planned to begin by the end of 2025, and full operation is expected to be achieved by 2030. ABO Wind Canada has been awarded the right to pursue development of its Toqlukuti’k Wind and Hydrogen project, which targets a capacity of 5 GW. World Energy GH2’s project, Nujio’qonik, will comprise two 1 GW wind parks and a hydrogen and ammonia plant in the Port of Stephenville.
