The Canadian power utility Hydro-Québec has has received 16 bids totalling 3,034 MW in a 1,500 MW wind tender that was launched in March 2023. The company said it would assess all the bids before communicating the results. The projects, which are required to be commissioned between 1 December 2027 and 1 December 2029, must be carried out in the ten areas identified by Hydro-Québec across the province, which have a total capacity potential of 3 GW.
The proposed projects will help meet Québec’s growing demand for electricity, as Hydro-Québec anticipates an increase in the province’s electricity demand of 25 TWh, or 14%, over the 2022–2032 period. In December 2022, Hydro-Québec announced a procurement strategy with a new mechanism targeting the development of over 4 GW of wind power in suitable areas in Canada by 2030. In March 2023, Hydro-Québec also accepted seven bids totalling 1,303 MW of renewable energy capacity, of which 1,144 MW of wind power, under two calls for tenders.
