The Californian Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved four lithium-ion (LiOn) battery energy storage projects for Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to replace retiring gas generators, along with the associated power purchase agreements (PPAs).
The four projects a total storage capacity of 567.5 MW/2,270 MWh. They include in particular a 300 MW/1,200 MWh LiOn battery project developed by Dynegy (Vistra Energy) and a 182.5 MW/730 MWh battery project owned by PG&E and developed by Tesla, as per an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. These two projects will be built in Moss Landing, one of California's most transmission-constrained region.
Once built, the projects would replace three plants owned by generator Calpine, namely the 580 MW Metcalf plant and the Feather River and Yuba City generators, both 48 MW. The California PUC considered that the cost of the batteries is cheaper than continuing operating the gas-fired power plants.
