Brazil receives bids for over 74 GW on first capacity reserve auction

The Brazilian Energy Agency (EPE) has received bid submissions from 327 projects with a total combined capacity of over 74 GW to participate on Brazil’s first Capacity Reserve Auction of 2025. The registered projects represent 228 new natural gas-fuelled power plants totalling 61,635 MW; 87 thermal projects powered with biofuels add up to 6,962 MW; and 12 hydroelectric expansion projects with a combined capacity of 5,476 MW. The EPE finalized the registration of projects for participation in February and is expected to conduct a technical evaluation of the presented projects to determine which ones will be able to participate in the auction before 16 June 2025. The auction is scheduled for 27 June 2025.

The auction is expected to result in the awarding of nine different types of contracts, depending on the type of project and their commencement date. An exclusive tender for battery projects is planned for H2 2025 year and its demand could be affected by the volume of energy contracted in this first capacity auction.

Brazil targets a share of 63% of renewables in its energy mix for 2034 and a 53% cut in GHG emissions in 2030 compared to 2005.
