The Brazilian government foresees BRL75bn (US$15.4bn) for investment in power generation as part of its new Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC), including BRL73.1bn (US$15bn) in renewables to add around 18.4 GW of new capacity. It includes BRL41.5bn (US$8.5bn) to develop 8.6 GW of solar plants, with project confirmed in the states of Bahia, Ceará, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí and Rio Grande do Norte. The programme also comprises BRL22bn (US$4.5bn) to develop 120 wind projects totalling 5.2 GW in the states of Bahia, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí and Rio Grande do Norte as well as BRL1.3bn (US$265m) for small hydropower plants. Finally, the government has set aside BRL8.1bn (US$1.7bn) for thermal projects with a capacity of 4.3 GW and BRL1.9bn (US$390m) for the Angra I nuclear power plant.
In addition, the government plans to spend BRL89bn (US$18.2bn) on transmission projects as part of the new PAC. Most investments in power transmission aims to promote the integration of clean and renewable energy sources into the Brazilian electricity system by expanding the electrical interconnection between the North/Northeast and Southeast/Midwest regions. The investment will allow an increase by up to 70% in the renewables capacity in the Northeast Region.
