Brazil awards 34 oil blocks to Petrobras, ExxonMobil, Chevron, CNPC, and Shell

The Brazilian oil and gas group Petrobras has acquired a total of thirteen offshore blocks in the Foz do Amazonas and Pelotas Basins in Brazil. The areas were awarded as part of the 5th Permanent Concession Offer Cycle of Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). Petrobras and ExxonMobil Exploração Brasil (on a 50:50 basis) acquired a total of ten blocks in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, with the partners being the operators of five blocks each. In the Pelotas Basin, Petrobras acquired three blocks with a 70% stake, in partnership with Petrogal Brasil (30%).

Overall, the ANP sold 34 blocks to nine companies. Chevron in partnership with China’s CNPC acquired nine blocks in the Foz do Amazonas; Chevron will be the operator, with a 65% stake in six blocks (35% CNPC) and a 50% stake in the three remaining blocks (50% CNPC). In the Santos Basin, Shell won four blocks, Equinor one bloc, and. Karoon Brasil 6 blocks. Finally, Dillianz won one block in the Parecis Basin. The 34 blocks are expected to attract around BRL1.5bn (US$265m).
