Brazil awards 13 power transmission projects with 5,425 km of lines

The Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel) has awarded 13 power transmission projects with more than 5,425 km of lines requiring a total investment of BRL15.3bn (US2.9bn). The projects, which would transmit renewable energy, will be built in the Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Rondônia, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Sergipe. Selected developers, which will receive a 30 years concession, are required to complete them in 42 to 60 months from the signing of the contracts.

Iberdrola's Brazilian won the second lot, comprising 1,707 km of transmission lines in the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. It consists of three 500 kV lines, plus a 440 kV line. In addition, the new 500 kV New Bridge 3 substation will also be built. It requires an investment of BRL4.9bn (US$920m).

In addition, the company was selected for block 11 with 291 km of lines in Mato Grosso do Sul. Other winners include a consortium comprising Cymi Brasil and Canada’s Brookfield for block 1, with 1,269 km of lines in Minas Gerais, requiring BRL3.7bn (US$700m) in investments, ISA CTEEP, owned by Colombia’s Interconnection Electric SA, for block 3, with capital expenditure estimated at BRL3.7bn (US$700m), and batch 6, Zapone Engenharia e Comercio for block 4 and block 13, in partnership with Sollo Energia, Eletrobras, through Eletronorte, for block 8, India's Sterlite for blocks 5 and 9, Engie for block 8, Taesa for block 10 and Energisa for block 12.
