BP has agreed to sell its Gelsenkirchen refinery and related businesses in Germany to Klesch Group, an independent European refiner, in line with its strategy to strengthen its balance sheet and increase its structural cost reduction target. Subject to conditions including regulatory and governmental approvals, the transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026 (BP press release, 19/03/2026).
The 265 kb/d Gelsenkirchen refinery primarily manufactures fuels for vehicles and aircraft, processing roughly 12 Mt/year of crude oil. The refinery also supplies essential feedstocks to the petrochemical industry in Germany and across Europe.
