The BNetzA launches a 100 MW auction for cogeneration plants (Germany)

The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA) launched a first call for tender for combined heat and power plants (Kraft-Wärme-Kopplungsanlagen)  for a bidding period which will last until the 1 December 2017 deadline. For this first round, the maximum volume of the tender has been set at 100 MW of installed capacity and the maximum bid has been set at €7c/kWh.

This call for tender was launched in accordance with the latest amendment of the Combined Heat and Cooling Act (Kraft-Wärme-Kopplungsgesetz or KWKG) voted out in May 2017, setting that the subsidies mechanism for newbuilt and modernized CHP plants with capacities between 1 MW and 50 MW will be replaced by call for tenders. This means that the amount of financial support for cogeneration plants is no longer determined by law, but is determined under the framework of auctions.

From 2018 onwards, the volume of the next auction rounds will be increased up to 200 MW per year, of which 50 MW will available for innovative CHP plants (innovative KWK-Anlagen) for the first time. The share of innovative CHP facilities in the next tenders is expected to be gradually increased in the following rounds.
