The Indian state-run engineering and manufacturing company Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has won a contract to supply nuclear steam generators for the 2,800 MW Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojna (GHAVP) nuclear power project in Fatehabad (Haryana), in India. The order is worth RUP736 crore (approximately US$114m) and the steam generators will be used for the deployment of a 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR).
The GHAVP project is estimated to cost RUP205.94bn (US$3.1bn) and it will be developed in two phases. The first phase involves commissioning of two units (700 MW each) by 2020-2021. The reactors will be developed in India and are expected to be similar to the ones installed at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPP-3 and KAPP-4) and Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPP-7 and RAPP-8). BHEL is the only Indian company associated with the three stages of the Indian nuclear power programme, namely the first stage Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR), the second stage Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) and the third stage Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR).
