Belgium’s Ministry of Energy has launched a new tender aiming to procure 700 MW of offshore wind to be developed for the Princess Elisabeth Zone 1 (Lot 1) in the North Sea. The filing deadline followed by evaluation will take place between July and August 2025, while the results should be announced in December 2025.
Princess Elisabeth Zone 1 (46 km2) is the initial lot in a series of tenders scheduled between 2024 and 2028, which seek to allocate up to 3.5 GW of new offshore wind capacity in Belgium (700 MW PE1, and two tenders for 1,225-1,400 MW each). Commissioning of the first wind project from these tenders is scheduled for the end of 2028.
In September 2024, the European Commission approved a €682m Belgian scheme supporting the development of offshore wind capacity in the country, which notably supports the construction and operation of the first offshore wind projects in the Princess Elisabeth Zone.
As of end-2023, Belgium had around 5.5 GW of wind installed capacity, including nearly 2.3 GW of offshore wind.
