BC Hydro awards US$1.26bn contracts for Site C hydro project (Canada)

The Canadian power utility BC Hydro has awarded three contracts with a combined value of CAD1.65bn (approximately US$1.26bn) under the framework of the 1,100 MW Site C hydropower project in British Columbia (Canada). The generating station and the associated spillways will be built by the Aecon-Flatiron-Dragados-EBC Partnership (AFDE Partnership) for CAD1.6bn (US$1.22bn). In addition, F&M Installations will build the Site C substation under a CAD33m (US$25.2m) contract, while Reel Coh will be in charge of the design, supply and commissioning of the generating station's powerhouse bridge and gantry cranes under a CAD23m ($17.6m) contract.

The Site C Clean Energy Project consists of a dam and 1,100 MW hydropower plant, expected to generate 5.1 TWh/year of electricity. The total investment is estimated at CAD10.7bn (US$8.2bn). In November 2015, BC Hydro selected Peace River Hydro Partners, a consortium of Acciona, Petrowest and Samsung C&T, as the preferred proponent for the Site C main civil works contract. Voith Hydro was awarded a CAD470m (US$360m) turbine and generator order for project in April 2016. The construction of the project started in summer 2015 and it will be completed in 2024.
