The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) has received the design and construction license from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) for the construction of the Rooppur-1 nuclear power unit, which is expected to start on 30 November 2017. The commissioning of the reactor is planned for 2024.
The 1,200 MWe Rooppur-1 unit will be a modified version of the NPP-2006 VVER and will be built on the eastern bank of the river Ganges at Rooppur. The total project cost is expected to reach US$12.65bn and Russia will provide a US$11.38bn credit facility to cover up 90% of the costs.
The project is projected to generate 10% of Bangladesh's power generation upon completion, and will be crucial in improving the country's power supply security. Bangladesh is currently reliant on hydropower, coal and natural gas for power generation. The second nuclear unit at Rooppur is expected in 2024-2025.
