Azerbaijan launches its first renewable energy auction

The Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan has launched the country’s first renewable auction, which is for a 100 MW solar power plant project located in the Gobustan region (eastern Azerbaijan). Bids for the auction, which was established with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), can be submitted until 14 June 2024. The ministry aims to shortlist bidders under a request for proposals (RFQ) round, to be completed by 12 July 2024.

Azerbaijan, which will host the COP29 climate change conference in November 2024, aims to bring the renewable energy share in its total installed capacity to at least 30% by 2030 (16% in 2022, including 15% of hydro). In 2022, solar and wind both represented less than 1% of the country’s capacity with only 51 MW and 64 MW installed respectively.

Oil and gas still dominate Azerbaijan’s power capacity (3.6 GW and 3.1 GW installed respectively in 2022), while gas dominates power generation with over 27 TWh (93% of the country’s total generation).
