Austria will appeal EU judgment on Hinkley Point C nuclear project (UK)

The Austrian government plans to appeal against the judgment passed by the European Union’s (EU) General Court in July 2018 regarding the Hinkley Point C nuclear project in the United Kingdom (UK). In 2015, Austria filed a legal complaint with the European Commission against state subsidies to the project on the basis that rules were violated by the UK when it accepted a deal to guarantee the price of electricity generated from the proposed project. However, the Court considered that the aid offered to the project did not violate EU rules or contradict renewable energy support policies and therefore rejected Austria's claim.

The Hinkley Point C project will consist of two 1,630 MW Areva EPR reactors and is developed by EDF, CGNPC and CNNC. The construction costs for the facility are expected to reach a total of £20.3bn (€23bn). In June 2018, turbine manufacturer GE Power started manufacturing activities for the steam turbines as part of a contract awarded in May 2016.
