Austria introduces regulatory reforms to expand onshore wind power

The Austrian Government has introduced Market Premium Regulation for the years 2024 and 2025 for onshore wind. The tender volumes for 2024 have been increased from 400 MW to 582 MW for 2024 and to 500 MW for 2025. A tender volume of 282 MW will be available at the first tender date on 14 May 2024. The compensation for yield differences due to wind conditions has been tightened in high-yield locations. The surcharge will be increased from up to 7.66% to up to 8.13% for wind parks on mountain sites. Additionally, the regulation requires for the federal states to adapt their legislation to ensure the expansion of wind power beyond the next two years (land designation, efficiency in licensing procedures, etc.).

At the end of 2022, Austria had a capacity of 28.4 GW of which 3.7 GW where from onshore wind (13%). Approximately 1 GW is expected to be tendered in the coming years to achieve the objectives of the medium-term requirements for the European Union's targets and for achieving the climate neutrality target by 2040. Currently, around 1,200 MW of wind power projects have achieved EIA approval while 850 MW are going through the approval process, with the projects being able to apply for funding.
