Australia’s NSW launches a series of tenders to build 12 GW of renewables

The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) has launched the first of a series of tenders which aim to build a total of 12 GW of renewable energy capacity and 2 GW of long-duration energy storage by 2030. The tenders will be organised every six months for a period of 10 years.

These tenders follow the creation of five renewable energy zones (REZ) in NSW and are part of the state’s Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, which plans to replace the generation capacity from four of the state’s five coal-fired power plants with modern electricity infrastructure.

For this first round, which will focus mainly on the Central-West Orana REZ around the city of Dubbo, interested parties can register for the competitive bidding process until 28 October 2022.

In late August 2022, the state of NSW received 44 expressions of interest for power generation and energy storage projects at the Illawarra REZ, totalling a potential 17 GW of capacity.
