The Australian Government has selected 19 projects with a total capacity of 7.8 GW under Tender 7 of the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), which initially targeted only 5 GW of capacity (DCCEEW press release, 23/05/2026). Eight of them are hybrid, comprising a battery along with wind or solar generation, contributing over 2 GW/7.9 GWh of storage to the grid.
Most of the projects are located in New South Wales (9 projects, 3.9 GW), followed by Queensland (5 projects, 2.7 GW). The largest awarded project is the Yanco Delta Wind Farm (1.5 GW) operated by Origin Energy, followed by the Bungaban Wind Energy Project (Windlab, 1.2 GW) and the Theodore Wind Farm (Theodore Energy Development, 1 GW).
The outcomes of Tender 8 – NEM Dispatchable are expected to be announced in June 2026. Tender 9 – NEM Generation, with an indicated capacity of 5 GW, opened on 25 May 2026 and bids close on 20 July 2026. Tender 10 – NEM Dispatchable Capacity is expected to open in June 2026.
