Australia seeks partners to connect a 2 GW offshore wind project to the grid

The Australian state of Victoria through the governmental agency VicGrid has invited expressions of interest (EoI) from potential industry partners to deliver a transmission system for the Gippsland offshore wind project. The deadline for the submission of expressions of interest for the project is 13 February 2025, expecting to start construction works in late 2027 to enter operations by 2030.

The successful applicant for the development of the onshore transmission system will sign a deal will work with VicGrid on designing, building, financing, operating the a double-circuit HVAC overhead transmission line capable of transferring 2 GW of energy generated by offshore wind projects to Victoria’s transmission network, the Declared Shared Network (DSN). The transmission link is still subject to an Environmental Effects Statement (EES) process and corresponding regulatory approvals.

Australia has a power capacity of 106 GW (end of 2023), of which onshore wind accounts for 10% with no offshore wind installed.
