Australia opens CIS Tender 7 to allocate 5 GW clean capacity

Australia has opened a new renewable energy auction, the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tender 7, to secure 5 GW of clean power generation capacity for the National Electricity Market (NEM). The CIS Tender 7 plans to distribute the 5 GW among its states, specifically 1.7 GW in New South Wales, 1 GW in Victoria, and 300 MW in Tasmania, leaving a total of 2 GW of unallocated generation that may be awarded to projects across the NEM.

The tender excludes virtual power plants, the use of native-forest wood waste and solar and solar-hybrid projects located in Victoria, in accordance with the renewable energy transformation agreement between the federal and Victorian governments. Solar+BESS projects in other states may apply under certain conditions. Awarded projects will be announced in May 2026 and must be operational before 31 December 2030.

Australia allocated 6.6 GW of renewable energy capacity and over 3,500 MW/11.4 GWh of energy storage capacity in its fourth CIS tender and is currently seeking to allocate 1.6 GW of renewable capacity in Western Australia through its fifth CIS tender.
