Argentina opens tender to contract 500 MW of BESS capacity around Buenos Aires

The Ministry of Economy of Argentina has issued a national and international open call "GBA Storage -AlmaGBA", aimed at contracting 500 MW of electric energy storage plants in critical nodes in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires. The total investment is estimated at US$500m and the battery projects are due to be developed between 12 and 18 months.

This tender is part of a series of measures that the government of Argentina has been developing since October 2024 with the Contingency Plan, which includes short, medium and long-term actions to recover an electricity system that was in a critical state in December 2023. The President of Argentina had then declared an "emergency" in the electricity and gas transmission and distribution sectors, citing an increasing obsolescence of the transmission and distribution assets, the insufficient adaptation to the needs of current and future demand, and the deepening inconveniences derived from the lack of renewal of the networks and their expansion.
