Argentina’s Ministry of Energy has announced the launch of a new tender that seeks to award 620 MW of renewable capacity in the country. Through a new resolution, the Argentinian Government has decided to invite interested developers to submit bids in the country’s National and International Open Call (RenMDI). Selected bidders will enter a 15-year renewable electricity supply contracts with Argentina’s wholesale electricity market company, CAMMESA.
The tender will be divided into two parts: the first part will seek to replace 500 MW of forced generation, which is operated by inefficient and more expensive generating units, through new projects of renewable technologies such as solar photovoltaic (with or without storage), wind (only with storage) and biomass. The second part, for 120 MW, will seek to diversify the sources with the awarding of biogas, landfill biogas, small hydroelectric and biomass. Both lines have power limits, and the tender will be divided into regions that will compete with each other in the auction.
The selected bidders will have to pay a guarantee payment to CAMMESA, whose value will depend on the power offered (which ranges from projects smaller than 0.5 MW to more than 20 MW) and range between US$450,000 and US$ 7.2m. If all the power proposed in the tender is awarded, investments in Argentina’s renewable sector are expected to reach around US$500m.
