Argentina calls for public tender to privatise 4.3 GW of hydropower assets

The Argentinian government has called for a national and international competitive public tender for the sale of the majority shareholding of four hydropower plants in Neuquén (Eastern Argentina).

The process aims to renew the concession of the 1 GW Alicurá (1 GW) operated by AES, the 1.3 GW El Chocón operated by Enel, the 500 MW Cerros Colorados operated by Duke Energy and the 1.4 GW Piedra del Águila operated by Piedra del Águila Hidroeléctrica Argentina. For the moment, state-owned companies ENARSA and NASA hold the majority shares of the projects (98% and 2%, respectively), and they are expected to transfer their shares package to the private sector within the next six months. The Argentinian Agency for the Transformation of Public Enterprises is set to manage the tender.

At the end of 2023, Argentina had a total installed capacity of 48 GW, of which hydro accounted for 24% (11 GW).
