The Argentinian Secretariat of Energy has selected 634 MW of power projects in the RenMDI renewables auction, slightly surpassing the targeted capacity. The auction, launched in early 2023, aimed to gather proposals for 620 MW of renewables. The competition had two groups: Group 1 with 500 MW for biomass energy, solar PV (with or without storage), and wind power with storage; and Group 2 with 120 MW for biomass, biogas from organic and landfill sources, and small hydro.
A total of 98 projects were eligible for power purchase agreements (PPAs) with CAMMESA, the Argentine wholesale electricity market operator. Group 1 had 46 projects selected (514 MW), including 44 solar parks (501 MW), one 10 MW wind-plus-storage project, and one 3 MW biomass-based power project. Group 2 had 52 eligible projects (120 MW), including 24 biogas projects (30 MW), seven biomass energy projects (39 MW), two solid urban waste plants (13 MW), and 19 small hydroelectric stations (38 MW).
The projects in Group 1 must achieve commercial operation within three years from signing the PPA, while those in Group 2 have four years.
