Argentina announces tender for USD$710m natural gas pipeline project

The Argentinian government announced the tender for the "Reversion of the Northern Gas Pipeline". This project is expected to help advance the country's energy sovereignty by effectively supplying northern Argentina with gas produced in the south (in Vaca Muerta) by reversing the flow of the northern pipeline to flow from south to north.

The reversion requires the construction of a new pipeline of 122 km, using 36-inches diameter pipes and two 62 km loops next to the Northern Pipeline, with 30-inch diameter pipes. On the other hand, the gas injection direction of four existing compressor plants in Cordoba, Santiago del Estero and Salta will also be reversed.

The works necessary for this project will require an investment of USD$710m, of which USD$540m has been covered by the Development Bank for Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF). The pipeline is expected to be operational before winter 2024, connecting industries in northern Argentina (especially lithium mining) to natural gas networks in the south, and enabling exports to northern Chile, central Brazil and Bolivia.
