Areva's OL-3 nuclear project in Finland may be pushed back again

The Finnish power company Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) has provided an updated schedule for the commissioning of the 1,650 MW Olkiluoto-3 (OL3) nuclear power project in Eurajoki (Finland). The completion of the commissioning testing phase has not been progressing as planned in the updated schedule provided by the plant supplier Areva in June 2018. The next update is now expected for December 2018.

The OL3 European Pressurized Reactor (EPR) project is being built by a consortium of Areva GmbH, Areva NP (now Orano) and Siemens under a fixed-price turnkey contract. It has been hit by repeated delays, rising costs and court disputes. The fuel is currently expected to be loaded in January 2019; the reactor is likely to be connected to the national grid in May 2019 (its expected commissioning date) and the power generation start up is now scheduled in September 2019. The EPR reactor has been under construction since 2005 and was initially expected to be commissioned in 2009.
