Angola launches auction for 9 oil blocks in Lower Congo and Kwanza basin

The Angolan National Oil, Gas and Biofuel Agency (ANPG) has officially launched an oil bidding round for oil exploration in nine blocks in onshore basins of Lower Congo (blocks CON1, CON5 and CON6) and Kwanza (blocks KON5, KON6, KON8, KON9, KON17, and KON20). In the Lower Congo basin, reserves are estimated at 830 mbl (oil production over 30,000 bbl/d), whereas they are estimated at 400 mbl in the Kwanza basin (more than 82 mbl already produced). Under the 2019-2025 Bidding Strategy, the government of Angola plans to allocate 55 oil and gas blocks through 2025.

The country’s oil production declined by 15% to 1.3 mb/d in 2020. In 2020, over 61% of the total oil production came from deep water projects (20% from ultra-deep water and 17% from shallow waters). Gas production reached 31 bcm in 2020 (85 mcm/d). Almost 5% of the natural gas production was flared in 2020.
