Angola and Namibia will jointly build a new 600 MW hydropower project

The Angolese and Namibian governments have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of a new 600 MW hydropower project in Baines on the Cunene river (also spelled Baynes), in the Ruacana region of Namibia. The two countries plan to equally participate in the construction, which is slated to start in 2021 and last 54 months (commissioning in 2025-2026). Namibia and Angola will each benefit from half of the power generation.

The preliminary studies are set to start shortly but no other details have been given about the project so far. Once built, the project is likely to be operated by Namibia's state-run power utility NamPower. The project is not new and was initiated in 2005, when the firm power contract (FPC) between NamPower and the South African utility Eskom expired. Imports of electricity from South Africa became more expensive and Namibia was looking for a way to increase its energy independence.
