US energy utility Alliant Energy has secured a USD5.1bn loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to support power generation, energy storage and transmission projects across Iowa and Wisconsin (United States) (Alliant Energy press release, 28/10/2026).
The financing package will support the development of new generation assets, including 1.8 GW of natural gas-fired generation (1.6 GW of greenfield projects and 240 MW of expansions at existing gas-fired power plants), 1 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and transmission infrastructure. It will also help finance 2 bcf (56 mcm) of LNG storage.
According to Alliant Energy, the loan package is expected to generate up to USD1.2bn in customer savings over its lifetime through lower financing costs.
The DOE financing supports projects included in Alliant Energy's long-term investment programme and is intended to improve system reliability while accommodating growing electricity demand.
