Alinta Energy and JERA will develop a 1 GW offshore wind project in Australia

The Australian energy and gas company Alinta Energy and Parkwind (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Japan’s JERA Nex) have partnered to develop the 1 GW Spinifex offshore wind project in Victoria, Australia. The parties have identified a site for the project in the Southern Ocean Region Declared Area in South West Victoria and plan to engage with local stakeholders to refine their proposal and progress the project. The Spinifex project is expected to contribute up to AUD1.6bn (US$1.04bn) during the construction period and AUD40m/year (US$26m/year) in operation to the regional economy.

At the end of 2022, Australia had a power capacity of 101 GW, with onshore wind accounting for 10% and no offshore wind capacity. About 55 GW of offshore wind projects are under development in Australia’s six designated offshore wind zones.
