Algeria's Sonelgaz plans a new 2 GW renewable tender in early 2023

Algeria plans to add 15 GW of renewable projects by 2030 and authorities have mandated the state-owned power utility Sonelgaz to launch a tender by the end of the first quarter of 2022 to develop 2 GW of renewable capacity in 2023, as a first phase of the 15 GW programme.

In December 2021, Algeria launched a call for tenders for the development of 1 GW of solar capacity under the Solar 1,000 MW scheme, which was due to close on 15 June 2022. The deadline was however extended following a request by investors who required more time for conducting financial and technical studies. If developed, the solar PV project would generate its first electricity in late 2023.

In 2021, renewables were marginal in Algeria’s installed capacity, with only 448 MW of solar capacity (less than 2% of the total capacity), 228 MW of hydropower and 10 MW of solar.
