Alberta launches a 400 MW renewable energy bid (Canada)

On March 31, the Canadian province of Alberta has launched a 400 MW renewables competitive procurement process. The Alberta Electricity System Operator (AESO) has submitted a Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) within the frame of the Renewable Electricity Program (REP). The competition is open to any project larger than 5 MW and every proposed work must use the existing transmission or distribution system. Proponents participating in the first round must submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) form by April 21, 2017.

Selected projects are expected to start commercial operations by the end of 2019.

The Alberta authorities have set several objectives for 2030 and they plan to meet a 30% clean electricity target by this date, which will require an installation of 5,000 MW of renewable energies additional capacity. The local government also intends to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2030.
