The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a US$10m loan to support a planned green hydrogen and ammonia project in Namibia, which is expected to reach final investment decision (FID) in 2026 (AfDB press release, 09/12/2025).
According to the statement, the loan will support front-end engineering design (FEED) studies for solar and wind generation, battery energy storage systems, electrolyser capacity, and desalination infrastructure. The project aims to leverage the country’s solar and wind resources. Its first phase includes 3.75 GW of renewable energy generation, battery storage, 1.5 GW of electrolyser capacity, and key supporting infrastructure such as desalination facilities, pipelines, transmission lines, and enhanced port infrastructure.
Once completed, the project is expected to produce 2 Mt/year of green ammonia for export to key markets. “It will additionally avert annual emissions of 5 MtCO2 (…) while deploying 7.5 GW of renewable energy generation capacity, more than 10 times Namibia's current installed capacity”, according to the AfDB.
