AEP, Dominion, FirstEnergy jointly propose 765 kV transmission projects (US)

The US energy companies Dominion Energy, AEP and FirstEnergy have joined to propose several power transmission projects in the PJM region (United States). The companies have proposed several new 765 kV, 500 kV and 345 kV transmission lines in Virginia, Ohio and West Virginia, through the PJM’s Regional Transmission Expansion Plan (RTEP) open window process launched in September 2024. The companies have also proposed individual transmission projects.

The RTEP process aims to secure projects to realize the transmission system upgrades needed to maintain grid reliability through a competitive process. PJM Interconnection received dozens of proposals, including 18 proposed projects that wood cross the Dominion-AEP-FirstEnergy zones (of which 6 are listed as joint projects). PJM expects to release a short list of projects by November 2024, to eventually present its proposed RTEP to the grid operator’s board in early 2025.

PJM Interconnection is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
