AEMO receives more than 15 GW in bids for 4 GW RES auction in Australia

AEMO Services has received bids from projects representing more than 15 GW of wind, solar and battery capacity for the tender granting access rights for the South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in New South Wales, Australia. The tender received almost the quadruple of the solicited 4 GW of capacity, while a call for 1 GW of long-duration energy storage (LDES) of at least 8 hours drew proposals for more than 2 GW of projects.

The auction was conducted by AEMO Services as Consumer Trustee under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. EnergyCo, as the administrator of the South West REZ access scheme, is expected to award the access rights in early 2025, on the recommendation of the Consumer Trustee. The New South Wales Government expects that the strong competition for access rights in the South West REZ will help identify the projects that can be operational in the shortest timeframe.

In May 2024, the Australian government announced an expansion of the Capacity Investment Scheme, a renewable energy auction programme, aiming to deliver a total of 32 GW of new capacity by 2030, comprising 23 GW of renewables and 9 GW of clean dispatchable capacity by 2027.
