GE Steam Power Systems has signed a contract with for the delivery of the conventional equipment under the framework of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant project (Turkey) through its subsidiary AAEM Turbine technology (a joint venture of GE and AtomEnergoMash). The company will supply four nuclear turbine generators, including condenser vacuum equipment, a Gigatop 4-poles generator and the Arabelle half-speed steam turbine.
When commissioned in 2023 (delayed from 2020), the first Akkuyu nuclear reactor is expected to generate enough power to meet 28% of the current power demand in Turkey. The Akkuyu project is estimated at US$20bn and will consist of four 1,200 MW VVER reactors with a combined capacity of 4,800 MW. The other three units are expected to be commissioned every year by the end of 2026. In June 2017, the Turkish energy regulator, Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA), granted a 49-year power generation license to JSC Akkuyu Nuclear.
