The 1.2 GW Matarbari coal-fired plant breaks ground (Bangladesh)

The state-held Bangladeshi power company Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) has started to build the 1,200 MW Matarbari Island coal-fired ultra supercritical (USC) power plant in Bangladesh. The power project includes two 600-MW units and will be built with an investment of US$4.33bn in the neighbourhood of Maheshkali in Cox’s Bazar, in southeastern Bangladesh. Once completed, it will contribute to around 10% of the total generation capacity of Bangladesh (13.2 GW in late 2016).

The EPC contract was signed in August 2017 and was signed between CPGCBL and a three-party consortium including Sumitomo, Toshiba and IHI. Sumitomo will be in charge of civil work and auxiliary equipment as well as for port construction including dredging works while Toshiba will supply and install the steam turbines and the generators. IHI will be responsible for providing and installing the boilers.
