The French operator Voltalia and TAQA Arabia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian government to develop, finance and operate a renewable energy project comprising wind, solar and green hydrogen capacity, which will be located near the Ain Sokhna port in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (eastern Egypt).
The initial project will include a new green hydrogen production facility with a capacity of 15,000 t/year, through a 100 MW electrolyser supplied with 283 MW of renewable power. The project will be expanded to 150,000 t/year of green hydrogen with an electrolyser capacity of up to 1 GW, which will be supplied by an aggregate of 2.7 GW of solar and wind power. The land required by the project will be provided by the Egyptian government.
Egypt, which recently hosted the COP 27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, has been ramping up its renewable energy projects. The country has announced nearly 30 GW of new renewable projects since the beginning of November 2022, with various partners including Masdar, Scatec, Engie and ACWA Power. Egypt aims to reach a 42% share of renewables in its total generation capacity by 2035 (10% in 2021 with 6.1 GW).
