Verbund's sales rose by 6.3% to 54 TWh in 2013 (Austria)

Austrian power utility Verbund's electricity sales volume increased by 2.8 TWh in 2013 compared to the previous year, reaching 53.6 TWh. The increase in sales to resellers (+1.1 TWh) is attributable to higher sales to German municipal utilities. Quantities supplied to Austrian provincial utilities were nearly unchanged. Electricity deliveries to trading firms rose by 1.2 TWh primarily due to increased sales via power exchanges as a result of marketing the electricity from newly acquired power plant shares in Germany. Sales to consumers increased by an amount of 525 GWh. Internationally, the volumes sold to industrial consumers increased significantly due to successful marketing activities in the German market. Power generation remained relatively stable (+0.9%) in 2013 at 35.5 TWh; the bulk came from hydropower (30.9 TWh, +1.5% due to the acquisition of plants in Germany), while thermal power generation dropped by 10% to 4 TWh. Wind and solar generation doubled to 565 GWh, mainly due to the commissioning of installations in Romania and Germany. Verbund will no longer invest in CO2 emitting technologies. 2014 foresees measures to increase the efficiency of existing hydro power plants as well as the completion of the 430 MW pumped storage hydro power station Reißeck II. The group also plans to focus on its key markets Austria and Germany.
