US NRC approves 20-year life extension for the 1 GW V.C. Summer nuclear plant

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved an application filed by the US utility Dominion Energy to extend the operating license of the V.C. Summer nuclear power plant by an additional 20 years. The 1 GW nuclear unit, located in Fairfield, South Carolina, will thus be allowed to operate until 2062.

The V.C. Summer power plant, operated by Dominion, was originally licensed to operate for 40 years from 1982 through 2022. In 2004, the NRC had approved a prior license renewal to allow continued operation for an additional 20 years through 2042.

In 2024, the US nuclear capacity amounted to 102 GW (8% of installed capacity), with 94 reactors currently in operation.
