According to the US Energy Information Administration, total US net energy imports declined by 19% in 2013, reaching their lowest level in more than two decades. Energy exports increased by 4% during the year (+9% for oil products, and +77% for crude oil, while gas exports dipped by 3%). Growth in the production of oil and natural gas displaced imports and supported increased petroleum product exports, driving most of the decline: crude oil production grew by 15% in 2015 (as in 2012), contributing to a 12% fall in crude oil imports. As well, the rising gas output contributed to an 8% drop in gas imports in 2013. Overall, total energy imports fell 9% from 2012 to 2013.
