The US Department of the Interior (DOI) has announced its sixth offshore wind energy lease off southern Oregon, where two areas will be auctioned with the combined potential to generate up to 3.1 GW of clean energy, enough to generate up to 10.8 TWh/year and to power about one million homes. The lease areas cover about 790 km2 off the coast of Coos Bay (770 MW to 1 GW) and Brookings (1.6 to 2.1 GW).
The Final Sale Notice (FSN) is expected to be published on the 3 September 2024 with all the necessary details for the auction and award procedures, with the competitive procedure scheduled for the 15 October 2024, led by the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). The issuance of any lease resulting from this sale would not constitute an approval of project-specific plans to develop offshore wind energy, since they are still required to be submitted for environmental, technical, and public reviews prior to an official approval.
At the federal level, the United States targets 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 15 GW of floating wind capacity by 2035. At the end of 2023, the US had 42 MW of offshore wind capacity.
