The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has filed a motion under a federal court calling to withdraw its approval on the 2.4 GW Southcoast Wind project off Massachusetts (United States). If successful, the motion would allow the BOEM to restart the environmental review on the project arguing that the approval given during the previous administration was rushed and may not have fully complied with federal law.
The 2.4 GW Southcoast Wind (originally known as the Mayflower Wind) is being developed by Ocean Winds (a JV between EDP Renewables and Engie) and it consists of up to 141 wind turbines and up to five offshore substation platforms. The project had originally won the lease for the project in 2018 and it received the approval for its permits on January 2025.
The US administration has recently targeted the wind sector, including moves to revoke permits for the 2.2 GW Maryland and the 2.6 GW New England offshore wind projects and issuing a stop-work order for Revolution Wind (700 MW), which is already 80% complete.
