The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has released its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, in which the country plans to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 47% by 2035, from 2019 levels. The UAE should thus reduce emissions from 196.3 MtCO2eq in 2019 to 103.5 MtCO2eq in 2035.
As for sectorial emissions reductions to 2035, the country plans to reduce GHG emissions by 27% in industry (-24.6 MtCO2eq to 68 MtCO2eq), 20% in transport (-6 MtCO2eq to 24 MtCO2eq), 37% in waste (-1.8 MtCO2eq), 79% in buildings (-56 MtCO2eq to 15 MtCO2eq) and 39% in agriculture (-1.6 MtCO2eq). The new NDC also reiterates the UAE’s ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
In its previous NDC (the third update to its second NDC, unveiled in July 2023), the UAE had set a target cut its GHG emissions to 40% by 2030, compared to a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, seeking to cut emissions to 182 MtCO2eq in 2030 from 225 MtCO2eq in 2019 and a forecast level of 301 MtCO2eq in 2030. No mention of this previous goal is made in the new NDC, as the UAE switched from a BAU scenario targets to base-year scenario.
